Venus Williams progressed to the round-of-16 at the Miami Open after she beat Romanian qualifier Patricia Maria Tig in straight sets on Sunday.
Williams beat Tig 6-3, 6-0 to progress to the next round where she will face Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova. The Russian beat American qualifier Taylor Townsend 6-4, 6-2. Williams was on song as she won the first set 6-3 and completely dominated her opponent. The second set was a cakewalk as she achieved a bagel to win the match and advanced to the pre-quarters.
Kerber made to work hard
World No 1 Angelique Kerber was made to work hard as she advanced to the last-16. Kerber came down from a break down in both sets to beat American Shelby Rogers 6-4, 7-5. Kerber was 0-3 down in the opening set but made a strong comeback to win the set and eventually the match. Kerber was joined in the round of 16 by Britain’s Johanna Konta, Samantha Stosur, Lara Arruabarrena and Simona Halep.
