Former Indian No 1 Yuki Bhambri bowed out in the quarter-finals of the $50,000 Quanzhou Challenger after losing to Maximilian Marterer of Germany on Thursday.
The 143rd ranked Martner, who is seeded fifth in the tournament, defeated Bhambri in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 in 55 minutes.
Earlier in the day, Bhambri, 24, had upset the fourth seeded Slovenian Blaz Kavcic, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 in two hours and 16 minutes.
Almost two weeks ago, Bhambri had upset Marterer in the quarter-finals of the Shenzhen Challenger, before bowing out of the semi-finals to Japan’s Yuichi Sugita.
Bhambri, who is coming off two back-to-back semi-finals in Challenger events in Zhuhai and Shenzhen is now poised to crack the top-300 in the ATP singles ranking again, and is currently ranked 307th in the world.
