Facebook-owned Instagram on Wednesday announced that it had hit 1 million monthly active advertisers. The photo and video-sharing application has grown five-fold from its 2 lakh advertisers in 2016, Instagram Vice President James Quarles told Reuters.
“Last year, Instagram began pushing businesses that had created standard profiles to adopt business-specific profiles, and 8 million businesses have done so,” he added. Calling 2016 a defining year for the app, Quarles said the platform proved that visuals were a “powerful way to communicate what a business stands for”.
“Businesses are drawn to Instagram because it’s a place where people follow passions, everything from mainstream interests, like their favorite musician, to niche hobbies like candy art,” the vice president told Forbes.
A majority of the business accounts are owned by companies based in the United States, Brazil, Indonesia, Russia and the United Kingdom. Instagram was acquired by social media giant Facebook in 2012.
