The Bombay Stock Exchange Sensex dropped 317 points to close at 29,167.68 on Wednesday, while the National Stock Exchange Nifty ended 91 points down to settle at 9,030. Analysts attributed the decline to concerns over United States President Donald Trump’s economic policies.
While banking and automobile shares were hit the worst during the day’s trade, Bharti Airtel incurred major losses on both indices. BHEL, Tata Motors, Eicher Motors, ICICI Bank, Mahindra & Mahindra, Ambuja Cements, Maruti Suzuki and UltraTech Cem were among the biggest losers of the day on Nifty.
Axis Bank topped the list of major gainers on the NSE index, whereas Lupin Pharmaceuticals, Wipro, Cipla, Dr Reddy’s Labs and HUL led the 30-share Sensex.
The rupee traded ;lower at 65.43 against the dollar on Wednesday. Other Asian currencies saw losses, as well. The South Korean won dropped 0.4%, the Filipino peso 0.26%, Taiwanese dollar 0.19%, Malaysian ringgit 0.14%, Singapore dollar 0.1% and Indonesian rupiah 0.1%. The Japanese yen, however, improved by 0.1%.
