The Uefa Champions League quarter-finals draw on Friday threw up two blockbuster clashes, with Bayern Munich set to take on Real Madrid, and Juventus will cross swords with Barcelona.
Reigning English champions Leicester City will be up against the stiff challenge of Atletico Madrid. German side Borussia Dortmund have been drawn against French outfit AS Monaco to round up the last eight.
The first leg of the quarter-finals will be played on April 11, while the return legs will take place a week later on April 18.
Madrid and Bayern have met in 10 knockout ties, winning five apiece. Madrid have won their last three games against Bayern, including in the 2013-’14 semi-finals when the Spanish side, then coached by current Bayern coach Carlo Ancelotti, won the second leg 4-0 in Munich – the German side’s record home defeat in Europe.
Leicester, who are playing in their maiden Champions League, have been the surprise package of the tournament. They have met Atletico twice before. The Spanish side won both ties, in the 1961-’62 European Cup Winners’ Cup first round (1-1 away, 2-0 home) and the 1997-’98 Uefa Cup first round (2-1 home, 2-1 away).
