New Zealand captain Kane Williamson led from the front as they reached 177/3 against South Africa at the end of second day’s play in the first Test at Dunedin on Thursday.
The day began with South Africa’s Dean Elgar and Temba Bavuma at the crease. The duo struck a 104-run partnership before Elgar eventually fell for 140. Bavuma scored a noteworthy 64 as the Proteas were bowled out for 308. For New Zealand, Trent Boult and Neil Wagner were the pick of the bowlers taking seven wickets between them.
New Zealand were landed an early blow as Tom Latham was caught by wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock off a Vernon Philander delivery for only 10. However, opener Jeet Raval and captain Kane Williamson struck a partnership of 102 runs before Raval fell for 52. But, more bad news was in store for the Kiwis as Ross Taylor retired hurt on 8 to hand South Africa an advantage. Williamson continued the fight, even as Henry Nicholls got out for 12 runs. At stumps, Williamson remained unbeaten on 78 as New Zealand reached 177/3.
