India men’s rugby union side finished seventh in the Asia sevens, finishing with a 14-12 win against Pakistan at Doha on Sunday.
India thus ended a winless run in the competition. On day one, they were beaten 12-19 and 0-45 by UAE in round one. Their fortunes failed to improve on day two as well, losing to Singapore 7-19 and 5-17 against Iran in the fifth and sixth place playoff.
India, captained by Gautam Dagar, prevailed in a nail-biting contest against their arch-rivals to end the tournament on a winning note.
Philippines lifted the trophy, which had Singapore, Pakistan, Jordan, Philippines, Nepal, UAE, India, Thailand, Iran, Bangladesh and hosts Qatar as the participants.
