Dominic Thiem defeated Pablo Carreno Busta in the final of the Rio Open to win his first ATP title this year, and eighth career title overall. The eighth ranked Austrian, seeded second in the tournament needed an hour and 34 minutes for his 7-5, 6-4 win over the Spaniard.
Thiem had seven aces and one double fault in the match, while his opponent had a nil count on both statistics. While both players won around 66% points off their first serves, Thiem won a high percentage of points off his second serves, as compared to his opponent – 71% to 39% and it accounted significantly in determining the outcome of the match. Also, although he was broken twice in the match, Thiem also converted four break points on Carreno Busta’s serve to get the win in straight sets.
This was the 23-year-old’s first title in Rio, and his sixth ATP title coming on clay. Of the two other career titles Thiem has won so far in his career, one came on hard court, at the 2016 Argentina Open and the other was on grass, at the 2016 Stuttgart Open.
