South Africa’s AB de Villiers overtook former India captain Sourav Ganguly to become the fastest cricketer to score 9,000 runs in One-Day Internationals (ODI). The 33-year-old achieved the feat during the third ODI between South Africa and New Zealand in Wellington on Saturday.
De Villiers dethroned Ganguly’s record of reaching 9,000 runs in 228 innings, getting to the milestone in 205 innings. De Villiers became the second South African after Jacques Kallis to reach the 9,000 mark in ODIs. Overall, he is the 18th cricketer to reach the milestone.
De Villiers began the tour of New Zealand needing 87 runs to reach 9,000 runs. India’s Virat Kohli has a total of 7,755 one-day runs from 171 innings, meaning he needs to score 245 runs in his next 10 innings to break the current fastest-to-8,000-runs record of 182 innings, held by none other than De Villiers.
