The latest race crime in Donald Trump’s USA began with Adam Puriton, a Kansas city native, yelling “get out of my country” at two Indian engineers in a bar in the Olathe area before proceeding to fire at them. One of the victims, Srinivas Kuchibhotla, 32, died in hospital hours later, while Alok Madasani, 32, was discharged after being treated. Ian Grillot, a 24-year-old American was injured as he tried to intervene in the shooting.
Puriton was arrested several hours later at another bar, where he reportedly told the bartender that he needed a place to hide because “he had just killed two Middle Eastern men”.
External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj expressed her shock at the incident and said that two Embassy officials were on their way to Kansas city to provide help to the victim’s family.
The video above is an interview with Grillot, where he describes the incident. The 24-year-old went after the attacker after he thought he had heard nine shots, which meant the magazine was empty. It wasn’t and he was shot at in the process.
“I’m incredibly grateful that one of the gentlemen was saved,” he says in the video recorded at his hospital bed. “It’s terrible what happened to his friend but I think he was watching over us last night. I was told I was incredibly lucky.”
He added: “I was just doing what anyone should have done. It’s not about where he’s from, or ethnicity. We’re all humans.”
The video below is a report by ABC News about the incident.
