Facebook is testing a chat window-like feature for posts from users’ friends on the social network’s desktop version, CNET reported on Monday. The experimental feature will push certain posts from a user’s friend to the bottom edge of a web browser, giving it more visibility and allowing the end user to stay inside the news feed without having to open a new page for a post.
The pop-out window also has a text field for comments and allows users to choose whether they want to see the full post or hide it. A Facebook spokesperson said the feature was being developed based on feedback from users who wanted an easier way to “participate in conversations”. “We are testing a new option that opens up a window when someone comments on your post, replies to your comment or tags you in a comment,” the spokesperson said.
Facebook is currently testing the feature with only a small set of the social network’s users, the official added. It is unclear for how long the company has been testing the feature, the report said. However, it is possible that Facebook, which has almost two billion active users, could release the feature and then use it to enhance their advertising offerings.
