It’s no secret that some of the best hip-hop in India comes from Dharavi in Mumbai. The music video for music group Bandish projekt’s new single seeks to build on that idea. Featuring rappers MC Mawali and MC Tod Fod, the song, according to the video description, is about “how people fake and show a different picture to the world”.
It features Kannol, a style of percussion used in Carnatic music.
The band’s five-track EP Katal Kalaa was released in December 2016, and blends electronic and folk sounds to try and create a unique sound.
Here are MC Mawali and MC Tod Fod, both of whom are inspired by social activist Rajiv Dixit’s brand of swadeshi, explaining the philosophy behind their music.
