At least 30 people were killed in twin explosions in Kabul, Afghanistan, on Tuesday evening, said Public Health Ministry spokesperson Imail Kawasi. Authorities said that around 70 people were injured in the attacks near the Parliament in the Afghan Capital. They believe that the blasts were targeted at the country’s MPs.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the bombings.
Afghan sources said that a district chief of the country’s lead intelligence organisation, the National Directorate of Security, was among the victims, BBC reported.
A suicide bomber first blew himself up near the Parliament, which was followed by a car bomb explosion. Initial reports suggested that the attacks seemed to have been coordinated. They also took place during rush hour in a crowded area, where several government and legal offices are located. The number of casualties is likely to rise.
Earlier on Tuesday, a suicide bomber attacked a town in the southern Helmand province, killing at least seven people.
