Malaysia’s Mohd Faiz Subri won the FIFA Puskas Award at the FIFA Best Football Awards on Monday for an incredible swerving free-kick he scored for Penang against Pahang in the Malaysia Super League in February last year.
The award, named in honour of Hungarian great Ferenc Puskas, is awarded to the player who is judged to have scored the most aesthetically significant or the “most beautiful” goal of the year.
He was the first Malaysian to be nominated and win the honour. Subri won the award after picking up the most votes from football fans across the world.
Subri received the award from Brazillian great Ronaldo. There was a comical moment though, as the Malaysian scrolled through his phone on stage for to find his prepared speech.
