Scroll.in’s Priyanka Vora has been named one of the winners of the 2016 Early Childhood Development Reporting Contest conducted by the International Center for Journalists. Vora, who covers health for Scroll.in, won the award in the best use of data category.
Vora was selected for her extensive reporting on the conditions of children and mothers in India. In her piece, encephalitis killed children in Malkangiri, she explained how India would first have to fight hunger if it hoped to combat the fatal disease. The piece revealed that seven out of 10 children in the Odisha district are underweight, while one-third suffers from acute malnutrition.
In another story from Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Vora reported on why Adviasi babies were dying in the Union Territory as a result of teenage pregnancies and how the government is trying to combat the problem.
Apart from Vora, a panel of judges for the International Center for Journalists selected Nigeria’s Martins Ifijeh and Kenya’s Sharon Barang’a in the best reporting and best visual categories, respectively.
Vora began reporting when she was 19 and has won several awards in the past. In 2014, she was the only Indian journalist to receive the Global Health Reporting Award administered by the International Centre for Journalists. Her work on malnutrition in urban slums received recognition for gender sensitive reporting from Laadli Media and Advertising awards. In 2015, she received the Reach Lilly MDR-TB partnership award for her reportage on tuberculosis.
