Indian singles player Somdev Devvarman announced his retirement from professional tennis at the age of 31 on Sunday.
Devvarman took to social media on Sunday to reveal that he would no longer compete on the professional circuit.
The 31-year-old’s decision to skip the Chennai Open, which begins on Monday, had raised speculation that his return to competitive tennis was uncertain. There were no reports of an injury hampering his participation.
In December, the speculation rose as Devvarman’s name began doing the rounds as a potential replacement for Zeeshan Ali as India’s Davis Cup coach. However, eventually Ali retained his position.
In 2009, Devvarman had burst into the scene after reaching the final in the singles event of the Chennai Open as a wild card. A year later he had won gold at the Delhi Commonwealth Games. He also won gold in both the men’s singles and doubles event at the Guangzhou Asian Games the same year.
He had reached a career-high ranking of 62 in July 2011.
