At least 44 people were injured after 15 coaches of the Ajmer-Sealdah Express got derailed near Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh early on Wednesday, reported ANI. The Indian Railways has said that no deaths have been reported so far.
Indian Railways spokesperson Anil Saxena said the rescue and relief operations were under way. Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has announced compensation and assistance to those injured. He said an investigation would be carried out to ascertain the cause of the accident. UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has announced compensation of Rs 50,000 for those seriously injured, and Rs 25,000 for passengers with minor injuries.
The accident involving Train No. 12988 took place near the town of Roora around 5.30 am, reports said. Medical help has arrived at the spot, and 16 people have been evacuated by rescue teams, NDTV reported. Several trains have been diverted after the incident.
