Atletico de Kolkata beat Kerala Blasters 4-3 on penalties to win the Indian Super League 2016 final after the match ended 1-1 in extra time on Sunday. In front of a packed Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi, Mohammad Rafi gave Kerala Blasters the lead in the first half, before Henrique Sereno equalised for the visitors.
As the penalty shootout began, top goalscorer of the tournament, Iain Hume, missed from the spot. Kolkata went 0-2 down, but then converted all their strikes till the end. For the Blasters, Elhadji Ndoye missed his shot as Cedric Hengbart’s attempt was saved by goalkeeper Debjit Majumder’s foot. Jewel Raja netted the winner for Kolkata, who bagged the title for the second time. They first won the title in 2014, during the inaugural season, when they beat Kerala Blasters 1-0.
