The big news: Kolkata win in shootout
Atletico de Kolkata beat Kerala Blasters 4-3 on penalties to be crowned the Indian Super League champions after the match ended 1-1 in extra time on Sunday. Henrique Sereno scored for the visitors after Mohammad Rafi gave Kerala Blasters the lead.
Top goalscorer of the tournament, Iain Hume, missed from the spot and from being 0-2 down, Kolkata converted each of their last four kicks. For the Blasters, Elhadji Ndoye missed his shot as Cedric Hengbart’s attempt was saved by goalkeeper Debjit Majumder. Veteran midfielder Jewel Raja netted the winner for Kolkata, who have won the title for the second time.

- Barcelona beat Espanyol 4-1 in their La Liga clash on Monday. Luis Suarez scored a double as Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba netted the remaining two goals for Barcelona. The Catalans moved to second spot on the table, three points behind leaders Real Madrid.
- Manchester City fought back from being a goal down against Arsenal at the Etihad to win 2-1 and take second spot in the Premier League table. Arsene Wenger’s side raced into the lead in the fifth minute of the game through Theo Walcott’s strike, but Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling pulled it back for City.
- Tottenham Hotspur beat Burnley 2-1 as Danny Rose and Dele Alli scored for the Spurs. Ashley Barnes scored the opener as Burnley got the early lead, but could not hold on to it. Victory left Spurs in fifth place in the table, only one point behind rivals Arsenal.
- Mario Balotelli continued to dazzle at Nice as he scored a double to ensure that his team would cement their position at the top of the table with 43 points. Nice beat Dijon 2-1 as Balotelli was on target including a spot kick for the win. He has now scored eight goals in as many games.
- Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 40th hat-trick for Real Madrid as they beat Japanese side Kashima Antlers in extra time to win the Club World Cup 4-2. Real took the lead with Karim Benzema on target, before Gaku Shibasaki scored a brace to make it 2-1. However, Ronaldo upped the ante and scored three to power Madrid to victory.
- Bayern Munich beat Darmstadt 1-0 to take top spot in the Bundesliga owing to a stunning strike by Douglas Costa. Bayern face second-placed RB Leipzig on Wednesday.
- Joe Hart’s career at Torino seems to be running out of luck as his side lost 5-3 to Napoli. Dries Mertens scored four goals in the eight-goal fiesta. Mertens became the first player since 1974 to score consecutive Serie A hat-tricks.
