Sharad Pawar on Saturday stepped down from the post of Mumbai Cricket Association’s President after the board members decided to implement the Supreme Court-appointed Justice RM Lodha Committee recommendations, reported ANI. According to the Lodha committee’s new set of rules, administrators and government servants above the age of 70 cannot hold posts in cricket boards. Pawar is 75.
Joint Secretary of the association VP Shetty said that Pawar resigned to respect the Supreme Court’s decision. He, however, did not confirm whether the board has accepted his resignation. “To respect SC’s decision Sharad Pawar tendered resignation to managing committee, now we will see what we do with it,” Shetty told ANI.
The MCA managing committee had called for an urgent meeting to discuss the Supreme Court’s recent observations after the apex court came down heavily on Board of Control for Cricket in India President Anurag Thakur. The amicus curiae appointed in the Justice Lodha Committee case on Thursday had said that Thakur had lied to the top court under oath. Gopal Subramanian said Thakur had tried to obstruct reforms to the board.
Pawar on Friday had hinted at stepping down from the MCA president’s post, according to The Indian Express. “While I am closely associated with cricket, the matter is in the Supreme court. The Court is now going to decide how cricket will be organised. I don’t want to say anything about that. I don’t want to face contempt of court,” he had said at an event in New Delhi.
