PV Sindhu pulled off a comfortable 21-17, 21-13 win over Spain’s Carolina Marin to semi-finals of the Dubai World Superseries Finals on Friday.
The Olympic silver medallist, who had lost the gold to the Spaniard at Rio, exacted her revenge in their first encounter since the Olympics.
The tenth-ranked Sindhu went up against world No 2 Marin, having lost her second Group match to China’s Sun Yu on Thursday. Sindhu needed a win to stay in the competition.
The nerves seemed to have got her early in the first game. She trailed the Spaniard at the change of ends. Sindhu though got into her groove soon after resumption to take the game with a comfortable lead.
She produced a similar performance in the second game, outplaying Marin for long periods. She took the lead into the change of ends and extended it to a six point advantage after the resumption of play.
Despite the tense atmosphere, Sindhu kept her calm and closed out the game with a eight-point lead to clinch victory.
