India progressed to the Junior Hockey World Cup final on Friday, defeating Australia 4-2 in a penalty shootout in the semi-final in Lucknow. The game headed to the shootout following a 2-2 tie after regulation time.
Australia got off to a terrific start, with Tom Craig scoring from a penalty corner in the 14th minute. India’s Gurjant Singh equalised in the 42nd minute, and Mandeep Singh gave the hosts the lead six minutes later. Australia’s Lachlan Sharp scored their second goal in the 58th minute.
Indian goalkeeper Vikas Dahiya shone in the penalty shootout, saving two of Australia’s shots. The squad will face Belgium in the final clash of the tournament on Sunday.
