It is easily among the most heart-touching stories in football. Bradley Lowery, who is five years old and has terminal cancer, was the mascot at the Sunderland vs Chelsea game on Wednesday at the Stadium of Light. A video of his visit is winning hearts on the internet.
Lowery, from Blackhall Colliery near Hartlepool, was diagnosed with neuroblastoma in 2013 and was treated. However, last week his mother Gemma revealed his cancer had grown and he would require treatment one more time. For his treatment, to be done in the United States, more than £700,000 was raised, including a donation of £200,000 from Everton. With Christmas around the corner, Bradley has also received more than 11,000 Christmas cards from well-wishers.
On Wednesday, before Chelsea beat Sunderland 1-0, Lowery scored a penalty past Chelsea reserve keeper Asmir Begovic and was cheered on by fans of both the teams. Lowery fancied being around Chelsea’s Diego Costa and was seen spending time with players of both the teams before kick-off. The scorecard also displayed the back of a Sunderland shirt with ‘Lowery’ and the number five on it.
