Amazon Prime on Wednesday launched its video streaming service in India, a year after competitor Netflix entered the domestic market. However, while a subscription to Netflix costs Indians users Rs 500 a month, Amazon has priced its Prime video service at Rs 499 for a year. Moreover, those who had already signed up for Amazon Prime for its other services will be able to stream the videos at no extra cost, the company said.
The United States tech major said it had tied up with a number of Indian directors and artists including writer Prasoon Joshi and comedy group All India Bakchod to produce 17 original shows. In addition to this, it will offer popular Indian movies, both in Hindi and from other parts of the country, along with English TV shows such as The Good Wife and The Night Manager among others.
Amazon Prime’s launch in India came alongside its release in more than 200 other countries, NDTV reported. Original content produced for India will be available to users in other countries and vice versa.
