Reliance Jio Infocomm and Niantic, the developer of Pokémon GO, have reached a deal to launch the augmented reality app in India. “Our partnership with Niantic will help our customers enjoy content on Jio’s mobile broadband network,” said Reliance Jio President Mathew Oommen on Tuesday.
Jio users can download the app from both Google’s Playstore and Apple’s App Store from Wednesday. As part of Jio’s New Year Offer, customers can download and play the augmented reality game without any data charges till March 31, 2017, reported The Economic Times.
According to the agreement, Reliance Digital and Jio retail stores will be transformed into ‘PokeStops’ or ‘Gyms’ for the game. Players will have access to an exclusive Pokémon Go Channel on JioChat that will allow them to be part of the global community of players. They will also get daily tips and alerts on contests on the channel.
“We are delighted to partner with Jio to launch Pokémon Go in India,” said John Hanke, chief executive officer and founder of Niantic. The popular augmented reality game was launched on July 7. Over 500 million people have downloaded the game globally.
