Cyclone Vardah is expected to hit Karnataka on Tuesday and reach south Goa on Wednesday, reported Hindustan Times. Bangalore city received moderate rain on Monday night. The region is expected to get moderate to heavy rainfall for the next two days as the storm makes its way to Goa. The Met department has said that the storm has lost much of its intensity and will continue to weaken as it moves inwards, according to skymetweather.
The storm crossed Chennai with a wind speed of 110 kmph-120 kmph after wreaking havoc on the city from Monday afternoon, when it made landfall near Chennai. Schools and colleges will remain shut on Tuesday, as Chennai, Kanchipuram and Thiruvallur brace for heavy rainfall for the next 24 hours.
Flight and train services were reportedly operational after being temporarily suspended on Monday. The government, in its advisory, has asked people to stay indoors till Tuesday night. Defence forces, coastguards, National Disaster Response Force and its counterpart in the state have been kept on standby.
Thousands of people were evacuated from low lying areas before the storm hit the southeast coast. Despite measures and precautions taken by the state government, 10 people have died, including four in Chennai, two in Kancheepuram, two in Tiruvallur, one in Villupuram and one in Nagapattinam. The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government has announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh to next of kin of those killed, reported The Indian Express.
