Delhi failed to make it to the quarter-final stage of the Ranji Trophy after going down by five runs in a thrilling match against Saurashtra in Vadodara on Saturday. Needing a win to progress, Delhi were set a target of 276 and decided to go for the win. Gautam Gambhir and Shikhar Dhawan got them off to a good start but a middle-order collapse ensued from which they never recovered. Saurashtra’s Shaurya Sanandia was the wrecker-in-chief, finishing with 5/93.
Vidarbha beat Rajasthan
Vidarbha completed a six-wicket win over Rajasthan to end a low-scoring match in Greater Noida. The target set was 188 and Vidarbha were hardly troubled on their way to victory with Ganesh Satish and SK Wath both scoring at almost run-a-ball to take their team home.
Tamil Nadu take the honours in a high-scoring draw
Tamil Nadu took the first innings points in a high-scoring draw against Gujarat in Belgavi. Resuming at 397/4, Tamil Nadu finished the day at 580/6 declared with Kaushik Gandhi hitting a double century, Vijay Shankar a century and captain Abhinav Mukund scoring 99. Thanks to the draw, Tamil Nadu also qualified for the quarter-finals. Gujarat had qualified before the match.
Hyderabad hold on against Andhra to go through
Hyderabad held on to a draw against Andhra in Lucknow and in the process, qualified for the quarters, despite not getting the first innings lead. In another low-scoring match, Hyderabad were never in a chase of 219 in the last session, but were in danger of being bundled out after being 36/5 at one stage. But, captain Subramaniam Badrinath and Kolla Sumanth took them to safety and a place in the next round.
