India held all the aces at the end of Day 3 of the fourth Test at Mumbai on Saturday, with Murali Vijay (136) and skipper Virat Kohli (147, not out) smashing patient hundreds to keep England at bay. The hosts took a 51-run lead in the first innings, getting to 451/7 in response to England’s 400.
Despite losing Cheteshwar Pujara early in the day’s play, Kohli and Vijay put on a 116-run stand for the third wicket to wear the bowlers down. After Adil Rashid dismissed Vijay, the visitors enjoyed a resurgent spell, which saw them scalp the wickets of Karun Nair, Parthiv Patel and Ravichandran Ashwin in fairly quick succession. England found an unlikely hero with the ball in Joe Root, who scored Patel and Ashwin’s wickets.
Kohli, along with Ravindra Jadeja, to put the India innings back on the rails with a 57-run partnership. Rookie Jayant Yadav (30, not out) yet again showed terrific gumption with the bat to take India past England’s score.
The Indian Test skipper, who was dropped by Rashid just after getting to his half-century, was in solid touch and got to his second three-figure score of the series in the final session of the day’s play.
