India took the upper hand in the fourth Test match against England in Mumbai after Murali Vijay (70 not out) and Cheteshwar Pujara (47 not out) blunted the opposition’s attack and helped the hosts score 146/1 at the end of the day’s play. The visitors had made 400 in their first essay after resuming play at 288/5.

Ravichandran Ashwin (6/112) and Ravindra Jadeja (4/109) shared the wickets and it was the latter who was more potent in the day’s play. Despite losing two early wickets, the visitors trundled to the 400-run mark on the back of a gritty 76 from Jos Buttler. Ashwin registered his 23rd five-wicket haul, equaling former captain Kapil Dev’s feat.

KL Rahul was the only Indian batsman who got dismissed. Vijay and Pujara were seldom ruffled during their stay at the crease and piled on an unbeaten 107-run partnership with their side trailing England by 254 runs.
