England lost their way on day one of the fourth Test in Mumbai on Thursday after debutant opening batsman Keaton Jennings (112) scored a battling century. The visitors limped to 288/5 at the end of the day’s match with India’s in-form bowler, Ravichandran Ashwin (4/75) picking up four wickets.
Jennings, along with skipper Alastair Cook, blunted the Indian bowlers in the first session after electing to bat first. India came back into the contest with Ravindra Jadeja and Ashwin dismissing Cook and Joe Root, in fairly quick succession.
After negotiating a tricky phase, England wrestled back advantage from the hosts through Moeen Ali (50) and Jennings’ third wicket stand, which accounted for 94 runs.
Ashwin was once again England’s wrecker-in-chief as he picked up the wickets of Jennings, Moeen Ali, and Jonny Bairstow to take his wicket tally to 19 in the series. From 230/2, England slumped to 249/5 before a struggling Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler took them to safety.
