The Maharashtra Cabinet on Wednesday decided to rename the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus and Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, adding the title “Maharaj” to both. They will now be known as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. The Cabinet decided to change the names, saying the Maratha warrior deserved more respect, reported The Indian Express.
The airport was earlier known as the Sahar International Airport, while the railway station – a Unesco Heritage Site – was called Victoria Terminus. They were renamed in 1995 after the Bharatiya Janata Party-Shiv Sena alliance came to power in Maharashtra.
Earlier this year, the BJP government in Haryana had renamed Gurgaon to Gurugram and Mewat to Nuh.
