The Indian who had reportedly walked 1,000 km over two years to attend court proceedings in Dubai in order to obtain a flight ticket home has returned to his village, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said on Tuesday. “We have brought him back to India and sent him to his village. He went up and down to the court 20 times...That made it 1,000 kms,” she said on Twitter.
The foreign minister had taken note of Tiruchirappalli native Jagannathan Selvaraj’s predicament on November 30. She had sought a report from the Indian Embassy in Dubai. Selvaraj was forced to make the four-hour, two-way commute to a labour court in Dubai on foot as he did not have the money for a bus ticket, PTI reported.
Swaraj, known for her prompt responses on Twitter, has been commended for replying to messages on the social networking platform despite being admitted to Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences, where she is undergoing treatment for a kidney failure. The 64-year-old was admitted to AIIMS on November 7.
