Sixty-one Rajya Sabha members on Monday moved a petition seeking impeachment proceedings against Andhra Pradesh/Telangana High Court Justice CV Nagarjuna Reddy for allegedly committing atrocities against a Dalit judicial officer, reported PTI.
According to the notice, Justice Reddy’s brother’s name was mentioned in the dying declaration of a servant employed at his house, reported The Indian Express. The declaration was recorded in 2012 by the judge at a district court, S Rama Krishna. Krishna was allegedly assaulted when he refused to remove Reddy’s brother’s name from the declaration, the report added. The petition also alleged that Reddy was amassing assets disproportionate to his income. Krishna is under suspension.
The Rajya Sabha Secretariat said a decision on the petition’s validity will be taken in the next two days, added PTI. Sitaram Yechury, D Raja, Digvijaya Singh, Naresh Agarwal, Sharad Yadav are among the 61 MPs who have signed the petition.
According to the Judges Inquiry Act of 1968, at least 100 Lok Sabha members or 50 Rajya Sabha members have to sign the petition of impeachment. Then, the presiding officer forms a three-member committee, which includes two judges, if the complaint is against a High Court judge.
