Operations at the Delhi airport were affected for a second day on Thursday, as visibility reportedly dropped to below 50 metres because of dense fog. At least 20 domestic and international flights have been delayed or diverted so far. Around 50 trains have also been delayed in the region.
Other parts of the north also woke up to fog on Thursday, as temperatures dipped. One person died and ten people were injured in a car pile-up on the Yamuna Expressway in Mathura. The thick fog has also caused a spike in pollution levels over the past two days.
On Wednesday, the Capital saw its first heavy fog of the winter, along with other parts of northern India like Chandigarh, Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. Flight operations and transport had also been affected yesterday. The Indian Meteorological Department had warned that such weather would last six days, and that said shallow to moderate levels of fog would cover parts of western Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Sikkim from Wednesday.
