Haseeb Hameed’s maiden tour was thrown into doubt on Monday after breaking his little finger on the first day of the third Test at Mohali. Hameed sat out for the entirety of India’s first innings and did not come out to bat with opening partner and captain Alastair Cook during England’s second innings.
Hameed was pictured batting in the nets before the start of the third day’s play but it was Joe Root who opened with Cook after India had posted 417 in their first essay. The Guardian quoted an England spokesperson stating that that the 19-year-old, who has impressed on the tour, would come out to bat at some stage in the second innings. The report added that with the pain continuing to persist, Haseeb’s prospects of playing the remaining two Tests look bleak.
There will be a week’s rest before the start of the fourth Test in Mumbai. Discarded batsmen Ben Duckett or Gary Ballance will be in line to take Hameed’s place with Middlesex’s Nick Gubbins also sounded out as a potential candidate.
