At least four people were charred to death and nearly a dozen others suffered burn injuries in a massive fire that engulfed over a 100 hutments in Jammu and Kashmir’s Narwal, The Indian Express reported. The deceased included a woman and her two children. They were all from Myanmar. Officials said the cause of the fire has yet to be ascertained.
The fire spread quickly as the houses were constructed of wood. The injured are undergoing treatment at a local hospital. A large number of Rohingya Muslim refugees from Myanmar live in the area, which officials say is state land. Myanmar treats Rohingyas as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and does not acknowledge their rights as an official ethnic group.
