A teenager in Uttar Pradesh committed suicide on Tuesday allegedly after he failed to withdraw money from the bank to submit his examination fees, PTI reported. The police said that 18-year-old Suresh stood in bank queues for several days but was unable to get the cash he needed.
After an unsuccessful visit to the bank on Tuesday, he returned home and used his mother’s saree to hang himself from the ceiling, the police said. A case has been lodged.
Suresh was a second year BSc student at Panchnehi Degree College in UP’s Banda district. His family members said he had to submit the examination fees by Wednesday. Villagers reportedly pelted stones at the bank in protest.
Several deaths have been reported since the Centre decided to demonetise Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes on November 8. While a large number of them involved elderly citizens dying in long queues at banks, others committed suicide because they feared their savings had become worthless. There were also reports of children dying after hospitals turned their parents away saying they would not accept old notes.
