A fire broke out at Seth Sukhlal Karnani Memorial Hospital in Kolkata on Monday morning, triggering panic among patients and family members. The incident took place around 11 am when by-standers saw smoke billowing out of the fifth floor of the Ronald Ross building, which houses several departments at the hospital.
Fire department officials said there were no reports casualties or serious damage. Fire and Emergency Services Minister Sovan Chatterjee told IANS that all patients were evacuated in time. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also visited the hospital to take stock of the situation, reported The New Indian Express.
At least eight fire engines were pressed into service, though some reports said that there were more than 15 fire tenders at the spot. A similar fire had broken out at the hospital in September.
