Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa was moved from an intensive care unit to a general ward at Chennai’s Apollo Hospital on Saturday, said the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. “Jayalalithaa has been shifted to a special room at Apollo Hospital,” AIADMK spokesperson C Ponnaiyan said, according to NDTV. “The special room has larger space to even meet people.”
The 68-year-old party chief was taken off respiratory support on Friday, AIADMK had said, adding that she was likely to be discharged any day now. According to Chairman of Apollo Hospitals Dr PC Reddy, she was being kept in an ICU to prevent infections, but she had “recovered completely” and was in a position to carry out her advisory duties as chief minister.
On November 14, Jayalalithaa had released her first statement from the hospital since she was admitted to the facility for fever and dehydration on September 22. The Tamil Nadu chief minister’s health has been a matter of concern for supporters, despite assurances from Apollo that she was recovering well. Doctors from the United Kingdom and Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences had been flown to Chennai to help with her treatment.
