Sri Lankan batting legend Mahela Jayawardene on Friday was announced as the new head coach for Indian Premier League franchise Mumbai Indians for the upcoming season. The 39-year-old will replace former Australian captain Ricky Ponting who coached the team in the last two seasons.
“I am very excited by the appointment and glad that the Mumbai Indians management appreciated my presentation and ideas,” said Jayawardene, in a press release from Mumbai Indians. “I am looking forward to working with a really talented squad, all the support staff, and the owners to help strengthen the two-time IPL champions.”
Jayawardene was a batting consultant for England last year, helping their players to cope with spin. Jayawardene stayed with England through their tour of the United Arab Emirates last year. His contract ended after the World Twenty20 this year, where he helped England reach the final.
Mumbai Indians have won the IPL twice, once in 2013 and then in 2015. However, they faltered in their title defence last year, finish fifth in the table, and failing to qualify for the playoffs.
