The driver of a van carrying cash was killed and two others injured on Wednesday after unidentified assailants ambushed their vehicle in Assam’s Tinsukia district. The cash had been withdrawn from a bank the previous night and had been kept at a local police station, Hindustan Times reported.
Assam Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal announced compensation of Rs 5 lakh for Paul’s family, and ordered the Tinsukia district administration to oversee the medical care of the two who were injured. A police inquiry into the incident has begun.
Several deaths have been reported from around the country since the Centre made cash scarce through its move to demonetise Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes. Distressed citizens have collapsed in long lines outside ATMs, committed suicide fearing the loss of personal savings, or succumbed to illness after hospitals refused to admit them for want of cash.
