A special court in Mumbai has cleared the Enforcement Directorate to seek a Letter of Request to be sent to the United Kingdom to extradite former Indian Premier League chairman Lalit Modi to India.
In its argument, the ED had stated that it had not been able to execute the non-bailable warrant against Lalit Modi as he is said to be residing in the United Kingdom. The agency had said his custody was crucial to its investigation into corruption claims against him when he was the chairman of the Indian Premier League. Modi faces allegations of having acted against the interests of the Board of Control for Cricket in India with an intention to make illegal gains.
The ED had earlier sought details of transactions between Singapore-based Multi Screen Media and World Sports Group, with whom Modi had signed a deal in 2009 for the Indian Premier League. The BCCI has alleged irregularities in these transactions.
