Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan has called for an all-party meeting on Monday, to chalk out ways to ensure that the Parliament functions smoothly during the Winter Session, which begins on Wednesday. The Centre, too, has called for an all-party meeting on Tuesday in an attempt to seek Opposition cooperation in the House during the month-long session, ANI reported.
The Bharatiya Janata Party and members of the National Democratic Alliance are also scheduled to meet on Monday, in anticipation of a fiery Winter Session, according to ANI. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP National President Amit Shah are slated to attend the meetings.
The Winter Session is expected to have a tumultuous beginning, with Opposition party leaders already expressing their dissent over the government’s move to demonetise Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes. Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge had said on Sunday that Congress MPs will bring up the subject of demonetisation in the Parliament.
Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Anand Sharma had submitted a notice, seeking suspension of business on day one of the session to hold a debate on demonetisation. Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad had submitted a similar notice for a discussion on the Kashmir unrest.
