At least 13 people lost their lives and several others were injured in a blaze that engulfed a garment factory in Uttar Pradesh’s Sahibabad on Friday, ANI reported. Officials said the victims were workers who were sleeping inside the factory, The Indian Express reported. A short-circuit is suspected to be the cause of the fire.
Fire and emergency services official Abbas Hussain said two employees were rescued “as they woke up by chance and ran to the terrace,” AFP reported. He raised doubts over the legality of the factory structure.
Several factory fires have been reported over the past several months across the country, owing to non-compliance of workplace regulations.
