India has asked the United Kingdom to extradite 57 people, including former liquor baron Vijay Mallya, and Christian Michel, who is accused in the AgustaWestland helicopter scam. In return, Britain also asked for 17 people it seeks custody of under the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty, or against whom Letters Rogatories have been issued, The Hindu reported.
Officials told PTI that the request to extradite Mallya, who owes around Rs 9,000 crore to 17 banks in India, was discussed by prime ministers Narendra Modi and Theresa May during her visit to Delhi. India’s list included members of some Sikh extremist groups and Rajesh Kapoor, who is accused of kidnapping, The Hindu report added.
May is in India on a three-day trip, her first bilateral visit outside of the European Union, during which the two countries will also sign business deals worth more than £1 billion (approximately Rs 8,272.08 crore).
