The word "pride" brings with it a fair share of prejudice. While messages such as "be proud of who you are" are flashed across ads, motivational posters and self-help books, pride, in other contexts, is associated with vanity, arrogance, sin and self-aggrandisement.
This contradiction is also seen when the word is used in larger, more political contexts. While ideas such as gay pride and Dalit pride have led to progressive movements and empowerment, other ideas of identity based on pride boost regressive social formations.
In this episode of The Myth and Culture Podcast, Devdutt Pattanaik and Jerry Johnson explore the different ways in which the concept of pride has been used, how it is attached to a power dynamic and why it has come to acquire different meanings and connotations over time and across contexts.
