A girl died when she and a friend attempted suicide in West Bengal’s Cooch Behar district after two neighbours reportedly raped them, police said on Monday. The police arrested the two accused on Monday after they raped the Class 9 girls on Sunday. The second girl remains in critical condition in a local hospital, IANS reported.

The rapists were both known to the girls and lived in the same village, according to The Indian Express. The teenagers had reportedly gone out with them on Kali Puja on Sunday, which is when the two accused had dragged the girls into the bushes and raped them, the police said. The father of the girl who died said that she and her friend were being harassed by the two men, and alleged that the rapists used to follow them to school and tuition.

A senior officer from Mathabhanga police station said, “The accused in the case, Rudra Talukdar and Toton Sarkar, have been arrested and slapped with the charges of rape (IPC 376) and abetment of suicide (IPC 306).” One of the accused is a driver and the second a daily wager.
