A tenth-grader from a Hyderabad school had to undergo brain surgery on Wednesday after his teacher allegedly hit him with a wooden blackboard duster. An FIR has been lodged against the accused, Rama Devi. Police said that the teacher was charged with assault and is being questioned.
The incident took place at Rajdhani School premises on Wednesday. The police told NDTV that the teacher had hit Suresh Kumar for not paying a fine for missing school. The tenth grader, who did not come to school for a few weeks, and his mother were called to the school and were also asked to pay Rs 500 as penalty, reported Deccan Chronicle.
According to Kumar’s mother, the teacher had hit the 14-year-old twice or thrice. He was injured on the head and fell unconscious. His mother took him to a hospital where he had to undergo the surgery for a blood clot in his brain.
The school administration, however, denied the allegations and said the teacher had only scolded the boy. They added that Kumar had a clot in his brain, which only was aggravated after the incident. “We are inquiring if the boy had any previous problems,” Jagadgirigutta police station Inspector P Srinivas told Deccan Chronicle. The boy’s parents have rubbished the school's theories. "My son was perfectly healthy while leaving for school," Kumar’s father Ramjanam Prasad told India Today.
District Education Officer Usharani has initiated an inquiry into the case. Meanwhile, activists have demanded that the school be de-recognised and the accused teacher be punished for attempt to murder.
