The Home Affairs Ministry sought a report from the Delhi Police after one person was killed in an explosion at Naya Bazaar in the city's Chandni Chowk locality on Tuesday morning. "Prima facie, it looks like a firecracker explosion in a jute bag," said Virendra Chahal, joint commissioner of police (Northern Range). Five people were injured in the blast.
Earlier, Home Affairs Minister Rajnath Singh, who is in Bahrain, was briefed about the incident by Delhi Police Commissioner Alok Verma and also about the security measures implemented so far. Singh had directed the senior police officer to arrest those found responsible for the blast and ensure peace in Delhi, according to The Indian Express.
An anti-terror squad and special cell personnel had reached the site after the explosion, which the police also believed could have been a cylinder blast, according to The Times of India. The identity of the person killed has yet to be confirmed. Local Councillor Surekha Gupta said the explosion destroyed nearby shops, Hindustan Times reported.
