United States' Justin Thomas fired a final round eight-under-par 64 to cut a four-shot deficit and defend his CIMB Classic title in Malaysia on Sunday. India’s Anirban Lahiri missed out on a chance to win his first title on the PGA Tour, as he let a four-stroke lead slip and finished tied-third.
Despite the slip-up in the final round, it was Lahiri's best finish on the PGA Tour and only his second in the top ten. His previous best was a tied-fifth at the 2015 PGA Championships. Lahiri had finished second last week when he lost in a playoff at the Venetian Macao Open.
Lahiri's quadruple bogey nine on the par-five third hole gave Thomas the lead to win by three shots with a 23-under total. Lahiri was searching for a maiden PGA Tour win at the TPC Kuala Lumpur course but the five-shot swing after he lodged his tee shot in a tree left the Indian struggling to finish third. Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama birdied the last two holes to sign for a 66 and claim second place on 20-under, with Lahiri (72) and American first round co-leader Derek Fathauer (67) rounding out the top four a further shot adrift.
